LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight brings Gotham City to life as a fully explorable open world divided into 4 distinct islands. From the crumbling spires of Arkham Asylum to the glittering霓虹 lights of the Iceberg Lounge, every corner of Gotham is packed with secrets, collectibles, and story content. This section provides a complete guide to navigating Gotham's streets, skies, and sewers.
The Four Islands of Gotham
Gotham City is split across four major landmasses, each with its own distinct atmosphere, architecture, and challenges. Players unlock access to new islands as they progress through the main story campaign.
Island 1 — Midtown & Financial District
The heart of Gotham. This island features the gleaming towers of the Financial District, the Wayne Tower skyscraper, and the central business sector. Midtown is the most densely packed island with activities, including the Gotham Museum, the Hall of Justice, and the GCPD Headquarters. This is where most players will spend their early hours, learning traversal basics and tackling story missions.
Island 2 — Industrial District & The Bowery
A stark contrast to Midtown's polished towers. The Industrial District is a sprawling network of factories, warehouses, and shipping yards dominated by ACE Chemicals. The Bowery offers a more rundown urban environment with narrow alleys, neon signs, and the infamous Iceberg Lounge — Penguin's nightclub front. Shreck's Department Store and the Batman: The Animated Series inspired skyline make this island a fan favourite.
Island 3 — Arkham Island
Separated from the mainland by Gotham Harbour, Arkham Island is home to the infamous Arkham Asylum. This island has the darkest atmosphere, with gothic architecture, stormy weather effects, and the highest concentration of enemy encounters. The asylum's wings house boss encounters, and the island's cliffs offer some of the best gliding launch points in the game.
Island 4 — Uptown & Amusement Mile
The final island features the residential Uptown district, the boardwalk of Amusement Mile, and Haly's Circus — former home of the Flying Graysons. The Botanical Gardens provide a rare patch of greenery in Gotham's concrete jungle. This island also features the most challenging platforming sections and hidden collectibles.
Key Landmarks
Gotham is filled with iconic locations pulled from 86 years of Batman media. Here are the key landmarks you will encounter:
Traversal & Movement
Gotham City is designed for fast, fluid movement across multiple dimensions. Mastering these traversal tools is essential for efficient exploration:
Grapple Gun
Your primary vertical traversal tool. Aim at ledges, gargoyles, or grapple points to zip upward. Upgraded versions allow for faster retraction and longer range. Essential for reaching rooftops and vantage points.
Gliding
After leaping from a high point, deploy your cape to glide across Gotham. Gliding speed and distance improve with suit upgrades. Combine with grapple launches for maximum momentum — grapple upward, then glide across entire island sections.
Batmobile & Batcycle
Ground traversal at high speed. The Batmobile can be summoned to any road-accessible location. The Batcycle offers tighter handling for narrow alleyways. Both vehicles can be upgraded for improved speed, handling, and combat capabilities.
Batwing
Aerial traversal for covering large distances quickly. Unlocked later in the campaign. The Batwing allows you to fly between islands without using fast travel, and is required for certain aerial-based collectibles.
Fast Travel System
Once a location has been discovered, you can fast travel to it from the map screen:
- Batcomputer Terminals — Found throughout each island. Activate to unlock fast travel to that terminal. Usually located at major landmarks and mission hubs.
- Batcave Portal — Fast travel directly to the Batcave from anywhere in Gotham. Useful for quickly accessing the customization hub.
- Vehicle Summon — Call your Batmobile or Batcycle to any road-adjacent location without fast travelling.
- Island Bridge Tunnels — Connecting tunnels between islands serve as natural fast travel points. Unlocked as story progression allows access to new islands.
Pro tip: Unlock all Batcomputer Terminals early to build a comprehensive fast travel network. This makes collectible hunting and side mission completion significantly more efficient.
Exploration Tips
- Look Up — Many collectibles and secrets are on rooftops or ledges. Always check above eye level.
- Listen for Audio Cues — Character-specific sounds often indicate nearby secrets or puzzle elements.
- Use Detective Vision — Batman's detective vision highlights interactive objects, hidden paths, and collectibles in the environment.
- Switch Characters — Different characters have different traversal abilities. Some areas are only accessible with specific heroes or suits.
- Night vs Day — Certain events, NPC behaviours, and collectibles only appear at specific times of the in-game day-night cycle.
- Sewer System — Gotham's underground tunnels connect all four islands. Many secrets are hidden below street level.
