Multiplayer & Modes โ€” LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Guide

Everything about multiplayer and game modes in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Local co-op guide, difficulty modes, Mayhem Mode DLC, and tips for playing with a partner.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight embraces the series' cooperative roots with local split-screen co-op for two players. Whether you are playing through the story with a friend or tackling challenges solo, this section covers every mode, difficulty setting, and co-op feature the game offers.

Local Co-op

The game features local split-screen co-op for two players across all story missions and most side content. There is no online multiplayer at launch.

How Co-op Works

  • Drop-in, Drop-out — Player 2 can join at any time by pressing a button on their controller. They can leave just as easily, with Player 1 taking over any character the second player was controlling.
  • Dynamic Split-screen — The screen splits when players move apart and merges back when they are close together. No fixed split-screen boundaries.
  • Shared Progress — Story progress, collectibles, and upgrades are shared. Both players contribute to the same save file.
  • Same-character Restriction — Both players cannot play as the same character simultaneously. The game encourages complementary character choices.
  • Controller Requirement — Each player needs their own controller. Keyboard + controller mix is supported on PC.

Co-op Only Features

Some gameplay elements are designed specifically for cooperative play:

  • Team-up Puzzles — Certain puzzles require two characters to activate switches simultaneously or stand on pressure plates together.
  • Combo Attacks — Coordinated attacks between players trigger special team-up moves that deal extra damage.
  • Character Synergy — Combining different characters' abilities unlocks new solutions. For example, one player hacks a terminal while the other provides cover.
  • Revive System — When one player's health is depleted, the other can revive them before the timer runs out, keeping the action flowing.

Difficulty Modes

Unlike many LEGO games which offer a single difficulty level, Legacy of the Dark Knight introduces multiple modes:

Caped Crusader Mode (Standard)

The default difficulty designed for players of all skill levels. Key characteristics:

  • Health — Standard health bar with regular health pickups
  • Enemies — Moderate enemy damage and aggression
  • Puzzles — Standard puzzle complexity with visual hints available
  • Lives — Infinite lives with minimal stud penalty on death
  • Mission Failure — No mission failure; retry from last checkpoint instantly
  • Best For — New players, younger players, and those focused on exploration and collection

Dark Knight Mode (Challenging)

A higher difficulty setting for experienced players seeking a greater challenge:

  • Health — Reduced health bar with fewer health pickups
  • Enemies — Increased enemy damage, aggression, and variety. Armoured enemies appear more frequently.
  • Puzzles — More complex puzzles with fewer hints. Some puzzles have time limits.
  • Lives — Limited lives. Lose all lives and you must restart from the last major checkpoint.
  • Mission Failure — Mission failure is possible in certain sequences. Failing requires restarting the section.
  • Best For — Veteran LEGO game players and those seeking achievement/trophy challenges

You can change the difficulty at any time from the pause menu. However, some achievements/trophies may require completing missions on Dark Knight difficulty.

Mayhem Mode (Post-Launch DLC)

Arriving as part of the Mayhem Collection in September 2026, Mayhem Mode is a new gameplay experience that lets you wreak havoc as the villains:

  • Play as Joker & Harley Quinn — Switch perspectives and play from the villain's point of view
  • Destruction-focused Gameplay — Smash through Gotham with unique villain abilities and weapons
  • Separate Campaign — A self-contained story campaign running parallel to the main game
  • Unique Collectibles — Mayhem-exclusive decorations and unlockables
  • Co-op Supported — Play Mayhem Mode in local co-op as well

Mayhem Mode is included with the Deluxe Edition or available as standalone DLC. The full Mayhem Collection includes Mayhem Mode plus additional content yet to be announced.

Co-op Tips & Strategies

  • Complement Each Other — Choose characters with different abilities. Batman + Nightwing offers balanced combat coverage, while Batman + Batgirl provides a stealth + power combo.
  • Divide and Conquer — In open-world sections, split up to cover more ground. The dynamic split-screen means you are not tied together.
  • Share Studs — Studs collected by either player go into a shared pool. Coordinate big purchases like workbench upgrades.
  • Team-up for Puzzles — Two-player puzzles go faster with communication. One player reads the clue while the other executes.
  • Revive Quickly — In Dark Knight mode, limited lives make revives critical. Stay close enough to reach your partner if they go down.
  • Try Rival Characters — Experiment with different hero combinations. Catwoman's agility plus Robin's hacking creates unique traversal options.
