Gotham City is home to the most infamous rogues' gallery in comic book history, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight brings them all to life in brick-built glory. From the Clown Prince of Crime to the League of Shadows, here's every villain you'll face, their role in the story, boss encounter details, and how they connect to Batman's 86-year history.

Main Villains in Legacy of the Dark Knight

The Joker

Clown Prince of Crime — Main Antagonist

The Joker appears in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight through multiple eras of his history. A flashback to his Red Hood origin at Ace Chemicals shows his transformation, while the modern Joker appears as a major story presence in Chapter 3 (Amusement Mile) and Chapter 5 (Arkham Asylum). A Joker interrogation scene (Chapter 5) lets you choose between Good Cop, Bat Cop, Cheesy, Dark, and Nutty dialogue options — all leading to the same outcome. The Joker will also be playable in the Mayhem Collection DLC (September 2026) alongside Harley Quinn.

Bane

The Man Who Broke the Bat

Voiced by Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Bane appears as a major boss encounter in Chapter 6. His LEGO version takes comedic inspiration from Tom Hardy's Dark Knight Rises portrayal. The boss fight requires using the environment to deplete his venom supply before engaging in direct combat. Multiple venom tube variants are shown throughout the Industrial District.

The Penguin

King of the Iceberg Lounge

Oswald Cobblepot operates the Iceberg Lounge as his criminal headquarters (Chapter 2). The level features the famous vault code puzzle (596) and a boss encounter against Penguin wielding his signature umbrella weapons. His design draws from both the classic comic book look and the Batman Returns film aesthetic.

Two-Face / Harvey Dent

Split Personality Crime Boss

Harvey Dent is teased throughout the game via billboards reading "Hardly Dented" before his full appearance as Two-Face. The boss encounter takes place in a courtroom-themed arena where his coin flip determines his attack patterns. Two-Face represents the game's themes of duality and the fine line between justice and vengeance.

Poison Ivy

Botanical Terrorist

Poison Ivy is a confirmed boss encounter (Chapter 5) in a greenhouse/nature-themed arena. The fight involves navigating her plant-based attacks and using the environment to reach her. Her Legion of Doom membership in LEGO Batman 3 is referenced through environmental storytelling.

Mr. Freeze

Tragic Cryogenics Scientist

Dr. Victor Fries appears as a Chapter 6 boss with his tragic backstory intact. The boss fight takes place in his ice laboratory where players must manage freezing mechanics. After Nightwing joins the fight, Batman gets frozen — requiring Nightwing to solve puzzles to free him. Mr. Freeze's story remains one of the most poignant in the game.

Firefly

Pyromaniac Arsonist

Firefly appears as a boss in Chapter 5, fought in a museum/science exhibit setting. The encounter requires rotating projector valves to reveal Mars, then battling through a burning environment. Garfield Lynns' pyrotechnic expertise makes for one of the game's most visually striking boss fights.

Ra's al Ghul

Leader of the League of Shadows

Ra's al Ghul plays a crucial role in Batman's origin story. The Prologue shows Bruce Wayne training with the League of Shadows, and Ra's appears as a final boss in Chapter 6. Unlike some adaptations, this version draws from the classic comic book portrayal of the immortal villain.

Carmine Falcone

Gotham Crime Boss

Falcone serves as the antagonist for Chapter 1, representing Gotham's organized crime element. The encounter at the Iceberg Lounge establishes the game's detective mechanics and introduces Jim Gordon as a playable character. His role connects to Batman's early war on crime.

Red Hood One

The Joker's Origin

The Red Hood Gang appear in Chapter 1 as antagonists, with their leader "Red Hood One" revealed through a flashback to be the Joker before his transformation. The Ace Chemicals sequence recreates the classic Detective Comics #168 origin in LEGO form. The Red Hood identity is a key piece of Batman's history and the Joker's mythology.

Other Villains & Confirmed Appearances

Harley Quinn

The Joker's partner-in-crime appears in cutscenes and will be playable in the Mayhem Collection DLC (September 2026). Her classic red-and-black harlequin look is featured.

Killer Croc

Waylon Jones appears as a boss encounter in the sewers of Gotham. His massive size and brute strength require strategy over direct combat.

The Riddler

Edward Nygma's puzzles are scattered across Gotham — 31 Riddler puzzle rooms and 30 Cluemaster rooms throughout the open world. Riddler trophies are a major collectible category.

Kite Man

A Chapter 4 boss encounter inspired by Tom King's celebrated Batman comic run. Kite Man ("Hell yeah!") brings unexpected challenge in an aerial battle.

Egghead

The 1960s Batman TV show villain (voiced by Vincent Price in the original series) appears as a cameo. His inclusion highlights the game's celebration of Batman's entire history.

Clayface

Basil Karlo appears in the game's story, bringing his shape-shifting abilities to a boss encounter that requires pattern recognition and timing.

Killer Moth

Drury Walker appears as a minor antagonist. Originally created as an anti-Batman, his LEGO iteration is more comedic but still provides a fun encounter.

Scarecrow

Dr. Jonathan Crane appears in Arkham Asylum sequences, using his fear toxin in gameplay segments that challenge the player's perception.

Deathstroke

Slade Wilson appears as an optional or story boss encounter. His tactical genius and combat prowess make him one of the tougher fights in the game.

Villains & Arkham Asylum

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight features Arkham Asylum as a major location, particularly in Chapter 5. The asylum houses some of Gotham's most dangerous criminals, and its appearance draws visual inspiration from both the comics and the Arkham video game series. The game's combat system has been described as "Arkham-Lite" by critics, offering a family-friendly take on Rocksteady's acclaimed formula. Arkham Asylum boss encounters include The Joker's interrogation scene, Scarecrow's fear toxin sequences, and Riddler's puzzle rooms scattered throughout the facility.

DLC & Upcoming Villains

Mayhem Collection (September 2026)

The Mayhem Collection DLC will add The Joker (orange prison jumpsuit) and Classic Harley Quinn as playable characters in a new Mayhem Mode. This is included with the Deluxe Edition and sold separately for Standard Edition owners.

Suicide Squad DLC (Leaked)

A leaked Suicide Squad DLC may be arriving post-launch. Potential characters include Deadshot, King Shark, Captain Boomerang, Katana, Rick Flag, Killer Croc, Deathstroke, Bronze Tiger, and Polka-Dot Man. This has not been officially confirmed by TT Games.

Villains Across the LEGO Batman Series

The LEGO Batman series has featured Gotham's rogues gallery across four main games:

  • LEGO Batman 1 (2008) — Featured 59 characters including Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Two-Face, Bane, and Riddler. Voice-less storytelling with pantomime cutscenes.
  • LEGO Batman 2 (2012) — Expanded to include Justice League villains like Lex Luthor and Darkseid alongside Batman's rogues. First game with voice acting.
  • LEGO Batman 3 (2014) — Went cosmic with Brainiac as the main villain, Lantern Corps enemies, and a massive DC Universe roster. Included many deep-cut Batman villains as unlockable characters.
